Women’s Weekend in the Woods!

We had a relaxing and restorative weekend at Camp Indianola on the Kitsap Peninsula. There was dancing, laughter, crafts and food, as well hiking and yoga, campfires, singing, and a community crafter-noon. Most importantly, we had time to relax and unwind.

There were a number of highlights but most of all it felt like a women's community event, something that doesn't happen much anymore. -Claire B.

The time I spent with all the women fed my soul! My favorite part was, of course, the rope swing! woo hoo! -Jacki P.

Screening of WORD IS OUT

SLGFF
We were proud to be the community co-presenter of WORD IS OUT, screened on Sunday, October 19 at 2:00pm at the Harvard Exit Theatre as part of the 2008 Seattle Lesbian and Gay Film Festival.

WORD IS OUT is the first feature-length documentary about lesbian and gay identity made by gay filmmakers, this is a record of 26 people of all ages, ranging from housewives to drag queens, who talk articulately about their lives. While much has changed in the 30 years since this groundbreaking movie was made, you will recognize yourself or someone you know in these deeply affecting stories. Truly a must-see for anyone who has ever felt different, gay or straight.

The 13th Annual Seattle Lesbian and Gay Film Festival runs Oct. 17-26 at venues citywide. The largest event of its kind in the Pacific Northwest, the festival continues to gain industry and audience recognition for showcasing the latest and greatest in queer film, from major motion picture premieres to emerging local talent. Volunteer Meetup Session

Volunteers were presented an overview of the kinds of work we do at the Archives and what is currently available to be done. We have a variety of activities which require a large range of skills. Some examples are: administrative and office work, physically preserving and providing access to archival materials, meeting with donors of collections, creative fundraising projects, researching and interviewing, creating displays, planning and hosting events, connecting with the community, grant writing, website development, starting a newsletter and being a presence at area Pride & Lesbian focused events!

We can also provide supervision and mentorship for interns for college credit.

Please contact us if you would like to volunteer with PNLA.

Emily Glenn and Lisa Cohen visit with Lois Heindselman in Tacoma, Washington.

Lois is the 1st female piano tuner in Washington State. She was very active in the Piano Tuner’s Guild and beloved by fellow tuners. Lois was a show drummer with an all-woman band called the Mamselle’s for 10 years in her 20’s & 30’s. The Mamselle’s traveled all over the country and performed for service men at USOs as well as clubs and bars. Lois is considering donating her fabulous scrapbooks that document her time with the Mamselle’s to the Pacific Northwest Lesbian Archives.

Our ‘Maiden Voyage’ event was a success

Our “Maiden Voyage” event with Colonel Grethe Cammermeyer was so much fun. Women came from as far away as Tacoma, Langley, and Bremerton to hear Grethe speak about her experience collecting and documenting her story challenging the US military’s stance on LGBT service men & women.
